What is internally Grooved Copper pipe

Internally grooved coppper pipe, or so called inner-grooved copper pipe, means small diameter copper tubes with inner grooving, and in applications of modern air conditioning or heat exchange systems.

Compared with smooth inner copper tube, the inside superficial area of inner grooved copper pipe is bigger, so it's thermal conductivity is greatly improved (about 20-30%).  The excellent thermal conductivity performance of inner grooved copper pipe makes it idea material to energy saving systems.

There are many types of inner grooved copper tube, an experiment shows conclusions that:

  • From the experiments of horizontal heat transfer tubes, it was found that herringbone tubes showed the highest heat transfer coefficient and the least effect of PAG oil. In gas cooler condition, improvement of heat transfer coefficient depends only on surface area expansion rate of inner surface of grooved tubes but geometries. In evaporator condition, improvement by geometries of inner surface can be seen.
  • Flow visualization inside tubes reveals that the thicker oil film seen in spiral tubes do not exist in herringbone tubes. This clarifies the effect of geometry of inner surface on oil removal adhere to the wall. The removal of oil can be the key to mitigate the deterioration of heat transfer performance.
  • Heat exchangers using herringbone tubes can mitigate the deterioration of heat transfer rate when PAG oil is mixed. Increase in 7.5% and 17.7% of the heat transfer performances were obtained in gas cooler and evaporator compare with smooth tubes, respectively, when OCR is 0.5wt%.

Why copper?

Tubes with MicroGroove technology can be made with copper or aluminium. Copper fins are an attractive alternative to aluminium due to the better corrosion resistance of copper and its antimicrobial benefits.

Take GB/T20928-2007 for example, the specification is listed in the following order: 

  1. Product name
  2. Material
  3. Temper
  4. O.D.
  5. Bottomwall Thickness
  6. Fin Groove Depth
  7. Apex Angle
  8. Helix Angle
  9. Number of Tooth

For example, "seamless inner grooved copper coil pipe TP2 M2 φ9.52×0.30+0.20-53-18/60 GB/T20928-20072" indicates the tubes made by TP2, and temper is M2, O.D. is 9.52mm, bottomwall thickness is 0.30mm, fin groove depth is 0.20mm, apex angle is 53 degree, helix angle is 18 degree, number of tooth is 60.

However, different standards should have various ways to show the specifications.
